About GEARS

 GEARS

  • Modes of Power Transmission.
  • No Intermediate link or Connector.
  • Transmit motion by directed contact.
  • Two bodies have Rolling or Sliding motion a long the tangent at the point of contact.

TYPES OF GEARS

  1. Parallel shaft axis gear:- Gears involving two axis which are parallel to each other are called Parallel shaft axis gear. Example: Spur, Helical and Internal gear

     2. Intersecting shaft axis gear:- Gears involving two axis crossing at a point are called               intersecting shaft axis gear. eg: Bevel(Miter) gears

     3. Non-intersecting and perpendicular shaft axis gears:- Screw gears also sometimes                crossed Helical gears, are helical gears used in motion transmission between non-                  intersecting shaft and perpendicular shaft gears. eg: Worm gears

     GEAR RATIO

V(velocity) = ✕ ω(angular velocity)

ω = 2πN/60

ω1/ω2 = R2/R1 = N1/N2 = T1/T2

ω1(driving gear) & ω2(driven gear), R1 & R2(radius of gear), N1 & N2(gears RPM), T1 & T2
(teeth of gears)

  1. Spur gears:- It is simple types of gear, used in transmitting torque b/w parallel shaft.
  • Teeth are mesh in horizontal position.
DEMERITS
  • Producing very noise during working.

     2. Helical gear:-Used in transmitting torque b/w parallel or  non-parallel shafts.
  • Less noisy than spur gears.
  • Messing very good each other.

    3. Bevel gear:- Used to transmit rotary motion b/w intersecting shaft.
  • Teeth are formed on conical surfaces and teeth could be straight or spiral.
    4. Worm gear:- Used to transmitting motion b/w non- parallel & non- intersecting shafts.
  • Depending on the no. of teeth engaged.
  • Speed ratio is quite high.
Nomenclature in Gears
  • Gear & Pinion.

  • Small driving gear is pinion.
  • Larger one is the gear.
  • This reduces speed but it increases torque.
